<abstract>
R2VEG - Major Realignment Update Contract with PhotoScience, finished January 2010. Lynx Calcs Update - November 27, 2006. The original Integrated Resource Inventory (IRI-CVU) layer delineated existing homogeneous units of vegetation of 5 or more acres (2 or more acres of wetland or riparian). Polygons are homogeneous with respect to species, crown cover percent, tree or shrub size, and tree or shrub layers. Non-homogeneous areas within a polygon were described as patchy or linear components if they comprised 15% or more of the polygon. Lifeform and species information is described for each component. Lifeforms and abiotic descriptions used are trees, shrubs, forbs, grasses, bare and water. Trees and usually shrubs are identified to genus or species. Layer and size class are listed for trees and shrubs only. Size of trees is based on diameter, while shrub size is based on height. The CVU was vertically integrated with the CWU polygons (Common Water Unit) and optionally with the CLU (Common Land unit) polygons. The minimum requirement for documenting vertical integration was a whole polygon (see poly_source). Generally, 6th level watersheds were used but that varies across the Region. R2Veg - In the year 2003, a geodatabase design was created called R2Veg for migration from either of the Regions two vegetation polygon systems; CVU or RMRIS. The CVU data was greatly simplified by eliminating components and only storing data for the polygon as a whole. Components caused lots of confusion and were non-spatial. The component data was transferred to R2Veg by using a weighted average based on component area. A new term called PARTITION was invented allowing the naming schemes to transfer from the two different systems. A partition could be a watershed, location, entire Forest, Grassland etc. Each R2VEG polygon has an identification field referred to as VEG_LINK. This is the 22 character concatenation of partition and poly_id. R2Veg polygons also have an identification field referred to as FSVEG_LINK. This is a 12 character field linking the VEG polygon to the NRIS-FSVEG stand setting id for those polygons that have stand exam data. For older data this is location||site||proc_forest. For data collected on R2Veg polygons this is partition|| 4-digit-poly_id||proc_forest. The other important field relating R2Veg polygons to data is called TERRA_LINK. This is used to link to a TEU point or to a classification in NRIS-TERRA.

<datacred>In August of 1990, the Regional Leadership Team approved an effort to integrate certain aspects of the Region's natural resource information. Among the influences leading to that decision were: "Integrated Resource Inventory and Geographic Information: Approach to Spatial Natural Resource Information in the Forest Service," a Washington Office paper (draft) that started the thinking about an explicit information structure for storing basic geographic information and determining its relationship to an integrated resource inventory; the 1988 Resource Information Project (RIP) that reviewed commonality of resource information between field units within the Forest Service; R-2's Vision 2000, adopted in December of 1989, which held that R-2's resource information is collected and stored in an electronic integrated environment as basic data, and that R-2's objective is to achieve a fully integrated resource information environment by the year 2000; and, Project 615, the Agency's acquisition of new office automation technology, including Geographic Information System (GIS). This decision led to the development and implementation of the Rocky Mountain Region Integrated Resource Inventory (IRI).</datacred>

Data Notes Accuracy - No accuracy assessment has been performed on this layer. Delineations are transferred using 1:24000 scale paper orthophotos. Data is initially based on photo interpretation with ancillary field data. Field data is used to continually update the product. The data source is documented in the sample protocol.
Dynamism - This is a dynamic layer that is constantly changing to reflect the existing vegetation. Changes affecting vegetation include man made disturbance, natural disturbance, and natural succession. Change detection tools, the activity layer, digital orthoquads, and new resource photography are all necessary for maintaining this layer.
Linkages - Watershed lines in this layer are coincident with lines in the cwu watershed coverage. Water bodies are coincident with the cwu layer. The outer edges were clipped by the Forest/Grassland Boundary in some cases when adjacent to other Forests or Grasslands. Various levels of watersheds were used. When converting to R2Veg a 6 character watershed alias was used in place of the official watershed number. This also reflects that these watershed boundaries were frozen for the purpose of R2Veg. They are not intended to be used for analysis . . . just an ID scheme and a way of subsetting the data for editing purposes. R2Veg does not require a subset for numbering but accomodates the CVU and R2RIS schemes for identifying polygons.
Coincidence - The minimum requirement for CVU is to insure coincidence with water polygons. As a minimum CFF water polygons 2 acres or larger must be merged and coincident with CVU.

<procdesc>December 2009: R2Veg polygon boundaries were updated by Photo Science under contract to the White River National Forest. Images used for the update were 2006 NAIP natural color (1m resolution) county mosaics downloaded from the USDA Data Gateway. Boundaries of R2Veg polygons were modified by photo interpreters while viewing the existing boundaries over the imagery in ArcGIS with boundary edits to reflect the visible boundaries in the images. A screen scale of 1:3000 or below was used for digitizing. After the redelineation was completed, the GIS Calcs table was updated using a Modelbuilder process to calculate the mean elevation, mean slope, and majority aspect of DEM pixels in each polygon.</procdesc>

If a species exists in all components the value is set to 100 percent. If a species only exists in a patchy component assigned 20 percent of the area of the polygon and in a linear component assigned to 10 percent of the area, the value is set to 30.
Calculation Tables
Within the geodatabase, there would be rules set to automatically calculate items when a change is made. There could also be forced recalculation, but with an automatic calculation, the need for this would be minimal (only when a formula is changed). There would be domains (valid codes) set up for each of the data fields for the calculated tables to ensure no one tries to change the data to an invalid value using other methods.
R2VEG_SPECIES_CALCS
